Oliver Abeynayake Dissertation Fellowship

Encouraging Original Research in the Humanities

The late Professor Oliver Abeynayake was a distinguished scholar renowned for his expertise in Buddhist Studies and Pali. In honor of his legacy of influential publications and significant contributions to the Theravada Buddhist tradition, the Research Centre of Sigiri Global Campus is proud to establish the Oliver Abeynayake Dissertation Fellowship. This initiative aims to support academic excellence and encourage original research among final-year undergraduate students in the Humanities.

What We Offer

The fellowship recognizes outstanding scholarly potential and provides financial support for students producing high-quality, original dissertation work. Each selected fellow will receive a total grant of LKR 50,000.00, disbursed in two instalments:

  • First Instalment (50%): Upon official announcement of the award.
  • Second Instalment (50%): Upon submission of the completed dissertation to the university, contingent on adherence to the proposal's objectives and timeline.

What We Expect From You

  • Applicants must be registered 4th-year undergraduate students at any University (government or private) in Sri Lanka.
  • The applicant's dissertation must be within the Faculty of Humanities.
  • Applicants must be actively working on their final-year dissertation during the current academic year.
  • The research must be the original work of the applicant.
  • All submissions must be free from plagiarism and academic misconduct.
  • Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to generate content, ideas, or written chapters is strictly prohibited.
  • Fellows must maintain high research ethics throughout the dissertation process.
  • Medium of Research: Sinhala or English.

Application Process

Eligible students are required to submit the following as a single PDF document to the Research Centre's official email:

  • A completed application form.
  • The first chapter of their dissertation OR a standard research proposal including:
    • Research topic
    • Objectives
    • Literature review
    • Methodology
    • Expected outcomes

Selection Process

  • All submitted proposals will be reviewed by a committee of subject experts.
  • Selection criteria include:
    • Clarity and originality of the research problem
    • Strength of theoretical and methodological framework
    • Academic rigor and writing quality
  • Two (2) fellowship winners will be selected based on the committee's evaluation.
